"Unstucking the Brain from the Past"

What is EMDR?

When we experience a traumatic event, our brain's natural processing system can get overwhelmed. The memory gets "stuck" in the nervous system in its raw, emotional form. This is why a smell, a sound, or a look can trigger a full-body "fight or flight" response years later. EMDR isn't just talk therapy; it's a physiological treatment that helps the brain "re-file" those memories correctly.

What Happens in a Session?

EMDR follows a specific 8-phase protocol. While you focus on a distressing memory, your therapist will lead you through Bilateral Stimulation (BLS)—usually via guided eye movements, hand-tapping, or audio tones.

  • The Result: The BLS mimics the "REM" sleep phase, allowing the left and right hemispheres of the brain to communicate.
  • The Shift: By the end of treatment, you still remember the event, but the "charge" is gone. You can think about the memory without your heart racing or feeling like you are back in that moment.

Who Can Benefit?

EMDR is a breakthrough treatment for:

  • PTSD & Complex Trauma: Including childhood abuse or neglect.
  • First Responders & Healthcare Workers: Processing "on-the-job" trauma.
  • Grief & Loss: When you feel unable to move past a devastating event.
  • Performance Anxiety: Clearing the "mental blocks" that prevent you from succeeding at work or sports.
