Commitment Therapy (ACT)
"Embracing Your Thoughts and Committing to Your Values"
What is ACT?
ACT (pronounced as the word "act") is a unique, action-oriented approach that stems from traditional CBT but adds a powerful twist. Instead of trying to "fix" or "stop" difficult thoughts and feelings, ACT teaches you how to change your relationship with them. The goal isn't necessarily to feel better immediately, but to live better by aligning your actions with what truly matters to you, even when things are hard.
How Does it Work at mind360?
ACT uses six core processes to help you develop "Psychological Flexibility."
- Cognitive Defusion: Learning to see thoughts as just "words" or "images" passing through your mind, rather than absolute truths you must obey.
- Acceptance: Making room for difficult feelings (like anxiety or sadness) rather than wasting energy fighting them.
- Being Present: Using mindfulness to stay in the "here and now" rather than ruminating on the past or worrying about the future.
- Values Identification: Clarifying what you actually want your life to stand for (e.g., being a kind parent, a creative professional, or a loyal friend).
- Committed Action: Taking concrete steps that move you toward your values, even if you feel uncomfortable.
Who Can Benefit?
- Chronic Pain & Illness: Learning to live a full life despite physical limitations.
- Workplace Stress: Managing "perfectionism" and staying focused on your goals.
- Anxiety & Depression: Breaking the cycle of "struggling against" your symptoms.
- Life Transitions: Finding direction when you feel lost or without a "map."
