Narrative Therapy

"You are the Author, Not the Problem"

What is Narrative Therapy?

Narrative Therapy is a respectful, non-blaming approach that views people as the experts of their own lives. It is built on the idea that we all carry "stories" about ourselves (e.g., "I am a failure" or "I am an anxious person"). Often, these stories are heavily influenced by our past, our culture, or our family. Narrative Therapy works to "externalize" the problem, creating space between you and your struggles.

How Does it Work at mind360?

In these sessions, we work together to deconstruct the stories that are making you feel stuck and "re-author" a more empowering narrative.

  • Externalization: Instead of saying "I am depressed," we might talk about "The Depression" as an outside influence. This allows you to see how it operates, when it shows up, and how you can resist its influence.
  • Searching for Exceptions: Your therapist will help you find "Unique Outcomes"—times when the problem didn't win. These moments are the seeds of your new story.
  • Re-Authoring: We identify your core values, hidden strengths, and preferred ways of being to write a life story that feels authentic and hopeful.

Who Can Benefit?

  • Identity & Self-Esteem: For those who feel defined by their mistakes or labels.
  • Grief & Loss: Finding ways to maintain a "continuing bond" with a loved one while moving forward.
  • Trauma Recovery: Reclaiming your agency after an experience that made you feel powerless.
  • Eating Disorders & Body Image: Externalizing the "voice" of the disorder to regain control.
